Teacher licences in England proposed by Labour

10:11 am on 12 January 2014

Teachers in England would have to be licensed every few years in order to work in state schools under a future Labour government.

Shadow education secretary Tristram Hunt said regular re-licensing of teachers would allow the worst ones to be sacked whilst helping others to receive more training and development.

The BBC reports the last Labour government made a similar proposal for what became known as "classroom MOTs", but then dropped it.

At present teachers are unlicensed.

Former schools minister Nick Gibb said the idea had been tried before and failed.
