Authorities detain Sochi Games critic

4:44 pm on 4 February 2014

A Russian court has detained an environmental activist and critic of the Winter Olympics in Sochi for swearing at a bus stop.

Yevgeny Vitishko will be held for 15 days.

With just a few days until the opening of the most expensive Games in the history of the Olympics, Russian authorities appear to be extremely sensitive to any potential criticism, the BBC reports.

Mr Vitishko has highlighted what he says is the environmental damage caused by the Games. He was due to travel to Sochi to represent a report when arrested and jailed for swearing in public.

Human rights group Amnesty International has accused Russia of intensifying a campaign of harassment against civil society groups ahead of the Olympics.

The Games will be held from 7-24 February.
