They include a letter from the American writer Ernest Hemingway, expected to fetch more than $US50,000.

She was a glamorous and talented singer, musician and movie star. Among some of Dietrich's most personal items up for sale are watches, letters, photos and one of her famous tuxedos.

The most striking piece is the letter from Hemingway whom she had a 30-year relationship, apparently unconsumated, the BBC reports.

Advising her on a Las Vegas stage show, he suggested her being fired out of a canon, drunk and naked.

The items are being sold by the Dietrich grandson, J David Riva.
