Students killed in California bus crash

6:57 am on 12 April 2014

Ten people were killed and at least 30 teenagers were injured when a bus was hit head-on by a delivery truck in northern California.

More than 40 students were on the way to Humboldt State University for an introductory tour of the campus. Both drivers and three adult chaperones were among those killed.

The crash happened about 160km north of Sacramento on Thursday evening.

Both vehicles were engulfed in an intense fire after an explosion when they hit.

The trip was part of a programme to introduce low-income and prospective students to the college.
