Police say another 124 people were wounded in the explosions at the Nyanya bus station. The bus station was packed with commuters at the time.

The blasts ripped a huge hole in the grounds of the station and and destroyed about 40 vehicles, the BBC reports.

No-one is claiming to have carried out the bombings, but the Muslim insurgent group Boko Haram has attacked Abuja in the past.

President Goodluck Jonathan pointed the finger at the group, saying Nigeria would overcome the brutal insurgency of the islamists, which he described as temporary.

Boko Haram has been waging an insurgency, mostly in north-eastern Nigeria, since 2009.
