5:44 am on 27 April 2014

A NATO helicopter has crashed in Afghanistan, killing five British service personnel.

The crash happened near Kandahar air base on Saturday about 30 miles from the Pakistan border.

It was the largest single loss of life for the International Security Assistance Force since another NATO helicopter crashed in December after being hit by the Taliban. Seven Americans and four Afghans died.

The Ministry of Defence in London confirmed the helicopter was British.

The BBC reports the cause of the crash may have been technical problems.
