Fatal shootings at Seattle campus

2:39 pm on 6 June 2014

Students at Seattle's Pacific University tackled and subdued a lone gunman while he was reloading a shotgun after killing one person and wounding three others.

Hospital officials said the person killed was a man in his 20s on Thursday. A 20-year-old woman is also in a critical condition.

Police in the American city in Washington state said a suspect had been detained, the BBC reports.

A student managed to disarm the gunman on campus and several other students held him until police arrived, officers said.

In a statement, Seattle Mayor Ed Murray referred to previous fatal shootings in the city and added: "Once again the epidemic of gun violence has come to Seattle, the epidemic of gun violence that is haunting this nation."

Harborview Medical Center said that the other two people injured were both in a satisfactory condition.

No details about the suspect have been released and the circumstances of the shooting are not clear. Seattle Pacific is a privately run Christian university, with about 4000 students.
