Super-typhoon heads for China

8:35 pm on 18 July 2014

A storm heading towards southern China has strengthened to a super typhoon as it approaches the provinces of Hainan and Guangdong.

Typhoon Rammasun, which killed at least 54 people in the Philippines, is expected to make landfall between the two provinces.

The state news agency Xinhua said it would be the strongest to hit the island of Hainan in 40 years.

The provincial government has evacuated 30,000 people from low-lying coastal areas, ordered fishermen back to port and cancelled all train services and many flights.

Flooding across a large swathe of southern China in the past week has already killed at least 34 people.
