Italian police have confiscated 800 million euros ($A1.15 billion) in cash and property belonging to a businessman in Sicily who is linked to the Mafia.

A statement on Saturday from the Carabinieri said the money and property were frozen following the arrest of Michele Aiello, 56, who is now serving a prison sentence of 15.5 years for Mafia activities, fraud and corruption.

The statement said the organisation of former Cosa Nostra chief Bernardo Provenzano had invested large sums of money in Aiello's activities.

The seized property included 250 million euros from several bank accounts, an oncology centre in Palermo, six healthcare and eight public works businesses, as well as land, apartments and vehicles.
