The hunt has begun for two lovers whose names are engraved on a gold ring that was discovered at the bottom of an ocean pool in the New South Wales region of Illawarra.

The yellow-gold ring is engraved with "Catherine and Keith" and "1968".

The names "Catherine and Keith" and the date "1968" are the only clues available.

Adam Devereux spotted the engraved yellow-gold band in debris in the waters last week and now he and his partner Bianca Goncalves want to solve the romantic mystery.

They have turned to Facebook to ask people to spread the word.

Speculation has started about the owners, who would now be an elderly couple if they were still married.
