Emergency services were called just after 6pm local time (8pm NZST) after a fire alarm went off within the fast food area.

The station was evacuated while 40 firefighters brought the blaze under control.

The fire started in a takeaway food outlet in the station's concourse and spread across four levels through ducting, Fire & Rescue NSW said.

It said the concourse was now safe and fire crews were ventilating upper floors.

Platforms were temporarily shut down but are operating again, although passengers have been advised to allow extra travel time.

During the fire, commuters posted photos on social media showing smoke billowing out of the century-old building.
