A man shot dead during a confrontation at a Sydney police station was a New Zealander, his family have confirmed.

Alex Petersen has confirmed to RNZ that it was his brother, David Petersen, who was shot.
Mr Peterson was originally from Mangere.
His family have paid tribute to him on social media this morning, including one from his nephew, who promised to look after his young family.
"I wish I had one more chance to tell you how much I love you and how much you meant to all of us and also how thankful I am for everything you done for me you saved my life you were more then just my uncle you were my best friend my inspiration my saviour and to thank you I'll watch over the girls till my last breath... rest easy Uncle Dave you are finally at peace," said AJ Petersen.
He was described as a soft-spoken man from Mangere.
"Rest in love my USO. You had a massive heart, always had time for a chat, picked me up when I was down and told me to just keep smiling. Ia Manuia lou malaga brother...Fly high brother," said Sione Halo.
Police in New South Wales said the man was shot at the Quakers Hill station after a confrontation about 10.30am yesterday.
He was shot once in the upper body by a sergeant of 24 years' experience during the confrontation that followed and died soon after.
Police said yesterday a large knife was found at the scene and they had "no idea" of the motive of the man.
The station remains closed and an investigation was underway.

No officers were injured in the incident.
A social media profile said Mr Petersen was from Auckland and attended Aorere College and Penrose High School.
He had been working as a scaffolder for several companies in Sydney.
Meanwhile, police in Sydney have been at a home in Quakers Hill, which is believed to be connected with the man who was killed.
