China providing military assistance in Darfur - BBC

9:41 pm on 13 July 2008

The BBC says it has uncovered the first evidence that China is providing the Sudanese government with military assistance in Darfur, breaking a United Nations arms embargo on Sudan.

A television documentary team tracked down Chinese army lorries in the Sudanese province that came from a batch exported from China to Sudan in 2005.

The BBC was also told that China was training fighter pilots who fly Chinese A5 Fantan fighter jets in Darfur.

China, which buys most of Sudan's oil, openly supplies Sudan's government with arms in the capital Khartoum.

The embargo only forbids military equipment from being moved down into Darfur.

China says it's asked Sudan's government not to send Chinese equipment there, but apparently this has made no difference.

The Chinese government refused to speak to the BBC on the matter.
