The SANZAR rugby board has proposed expanding the Super 14 finals to a top six playoff series for next year.

The recommendation has come out of a three-day SANZAR workshop in Perth which has also entertained including extra teams when Super rugby is revamped, potentially from as early as 2010.

The top six proposal will be considered by the three national unions.

New Zealand Rugby Union chief executive Steve Tew says the expanded playoffs series is expected to add one further week to the competition.
