Australians at the polls - as it happened

Millions of Australians cast their ballots in the country's federal election on Saturday.

At midnight, with over half of the vote counted, commentators were saying the race between Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull's Liberal-National Coalition and Bill Shorten's Labor Party was still too close to call.

One exit poll suggested support for minor parties and independents could have been at its highest level since the 1930s.
