Emergency landing after US plane's engine damaged

11:35 am on 28 August 2016

A pilot on a Southwest Airlines flight in America was forced to make an emergency landing after part of the plane's engine was torn off mid-flight.

In a statement, the airline said the flight was travelling from New Orleans to Orlando when the captain made the decision to land at Pesacola International Airport, due to a 'mechanical issue' with one of the plane's engines.

There were no reports of injuries among the 99 passengers and five crew onboard.

The National Transport Safety Board was notified of the incident.
