The latest Batman movie sequel has passed the $US400 million domestic box office mark in 18 days.

Warner Bros. Pictures said on Tuesday The Dark Knight grossed $US42.7 million in US and Canadian theaters at the weekend to bring its total domestic earnings to $US400.03 million.

The company says this is less than half the time it took Shrek 2 to reach that milestone. That movie took 43 days.

Warner Bros. expects Dark Knight to add at least another $US100 million to its North American ticket sales.

The Dark Knight is a follow-up to Batman Returns issued in 2005, based on the adventures of D.C. Comics' Batman character.
