A security guard in Los Angeles has shot and killed a fleeing gunman after a gunfight between rival Pacific Island gangs at a Samoan Flag Day festival.

The Los Angeles Times newspaper reports that the incident, in Carson, left two youths and a woman hospitalised with gunshot wounds.

Police say rival gang members at the annual celebration began fighting and at least two people then began shooting.

Two boys, aged 12 and 13, and a woman, 46, all Samoan, suffered wounds from which they are expected to recover.

Four years ago, another gang-related shooting at the annual celebration left a man dead.
