Three die in checkpoint attack near Kashgar

Three security staff have been stabbed to death in an attack near Kashgar in China's far northwest region of Xinjiang, the third such attack in little more than a week.

An assailant jumped off a vehicle passing a checkpoint and attacked the officers about 30 kilometres from Kashgar where 16 police officers were killed in a bombing and stabbing attack earlier this month.

Suspected Muslim separatists and suicide bombers launched a dozen attacks in Xinjiang on Sunday, killing 11 people in the blasts and subsequent shootout with police.

China has blamed the two earlier attacks, more than 3000km from Beijing, on separatists seeking to disrupt the Olympic Games.
