Safety record defended by airline

Qantas is defending its safety record, after a Boeing 747 jet lost power to an engine while on approach to Auckland International Airport.

One of the four engines on the incoming flight from Melbourne on Wednesday evening, was unexpectedly reduced to idle speed.

An airline spokesperson, Holly Williams, says the aircraft landed without incident and a faulty fuel-flow regulator was replaced. The plane has since departed for Los Angeles.

Ms Williams says safety remains the priority for the airline and is reassuring passengers it is safe to fly with the airline.

Qantas earlier grounded six of its Boeing 737 aircraft because of discrepancies in maintenance records.
