American archeologists working in Niger say they've discovered an extensive cemetery dating back thousands of years to when the Sahara Desert was a green and fertile land.

They found the graves of more than 200 people from two distinct stone age civilisations as well as the remains of crocodiles, hippos and large fish.

The find in northern Niger included the grave of a woman and two children laid on a bed of flowers.
