8:42 pm on 17 August 2008

An Afghan official says a roadside blast has killed 10 police in southern Afghanistan.

Kandahar province's police chief, said the officers were on patrol in the Shah Wali Kot district when their vehicle was hit by a roadside bomb.

Taliban militants have increased their attacks against Afghan police, who are often poorly equipped and poorly trained.

More than 3,200 people - mostly militants - have been killed in insurgency-related violence this year.
