French President Nicolas Sarkozy has arrived in the Afghan capital Kabul after 10 French soldiers were killed by the Taliban in the country's deadliest attack yet on international forces.

The soldiers were ambushed 50 kilometres east of Kabul during a joint reconnaissance mission with the Afghan army.

Mr Sarkozy and two of his ministers are to meet some of the 21 French troops wounded in the fighting, as well as Afghan President Hamid Karzai.
