New Zealand now has three gold medals at the Beijing Olympic Games.

The latest was achieved by boardsailor Tom Ashley at Qingdao. He finished third in the RSX medal race on Wednesday, to be placed first by one point.

Julien Bontemps of France was second and with Shahar Zubari of Israel was third.

He is the third New Zealander to win a gold medal in boardsailing: others were Bruce Kendall in 1988 and Barbara Kendall in 1992.

Ashley is the seventh New Zealander to win a gold medal in sailing at an Olympic Games. He won a world title off Takapuna earlier in the year.

Other gold medals for New Zealand in Beijing have been won by Valerie Vili in the women's shot put and Caroline and Georgina Evers-Swindell in the women's double sculls.
