Russian forces withdraw but peacekeepers remain

Russia says it has completed a pullout of its forces from Georgia.

However, the Russian military says it intends to maintain what it calls a "peacekeeping presence", controlling buffer zones which include the main highway from the capital Tbilisi to the Black Sea, as well as Georgia's main airbase at Senaki.

Russian forces entered Georgia on 8 August after Georgian troops attacked South Ossetia.

Georgia's interior ministry says Russia continues to occupy areas of the country.

A truce brokered by France, was signed last weekend. However, President Nicolas Sarkozy says Russia has not yet complied with the accord.
