The Gold Coast will make a bid to host the Commonwealth Games in 2018.

Queensland Premier Anna Bligh has contacted the Australian Commonwealth Games Association to express an interest.

She says a task force has been established and the Gold Coast will probably be competing with Perth.

The ABC reports the Gold Coast Combined Chambers of Commerce will get behind the bid to hold a Commonwealth Games there. Chamber president John Preston says the city is ready for the role.

The Gold Coast is the sixth largest city in Australia.
