A fire at a club in south China's Guangdong province left at least 43 people dead and injured another 88.

The fire broke out about 11pm on Saturday triggered by "fireworks" on the third floor, said police.

The club, called the King of Dancers, is in the Longgang district of Shenzhen just across the border from Hong Kong, and nearly 1,000 people were there at the time of the fire.

State news agency Xinhua reported that many of the deaths and injuries occurred in a stampede to escape through a narrow hallway.

It reported that the Communist Party chief of the province, Wang Yang, had ordered an investigation into the cause of the accident.
