Three arrests in Solomons after attack on NZ police officer

Police in Solomon Islands have arrested and charged three men with the attempted murder of a New Zealand police officer.

Earlier this month, Constable Chris Renata was attacked by a group of men and suffered leg wounds from a machete.

Police say the three men - aged 26, 31 and 39 - were charged in Honiara after they surrendered to officers based at Avuavu.

Police say consultation with community leaders led to the arrests.

However, the Acting Commissioner of Police, Peter Marshall, says the man they believe is the main offender in the attack, Alphonseus Toghovotu, is still being pursued.

The Solomons police are calling on him and several other people also believed to be involved to follow the example of the arrested men and hand themselves in.
