9:46 pm on 22 September 2008

Helicopters and speedboats are trying to reach nearly 570,000 Indian villagers as the death toll from heavy monsoon rains and flooding reached 119 in the past three days.

Most of the casualties were reported from India's most populous northern state of Uttar Pradesh, with more in eastern Orissa state and the northern hilly state of Himachal Pradesh.

Officials say the victims either drowned, were electrocuted or died in collapsed houses.
