A Dubai-based television channel says a little known Islamic group has claimed responsibility for the attack on the Marriott Hotel in Pakistan's capital, Islamabad, which killed at least 53 people on Saturday.

Arabiya television says the group calling itself Fedayeen Islam called its correspondent in the Pakistani capital and issued several demands including for Pakistan to stop its cooperation with the United States.

Pakistani investigators say they believe the attackers constructed the a 600kg truck bomb at a safe house in Islamabad, since all trucks entering the heavily-guarded city are searched at checkpoints.

They say it is likely the explosives were smuggled into Islamabad in small consignments from militant strongholds bordering Afghanistan.
