The Sri Lankan military says 60 Tamil Tiger rebels have been killed in fighting, which left three government soldiers dead.
A military spokesman says the fiercest battles took place in Kilinochchi district in the north.
He says airstrikes targeted rebel gathering points.
But a pro-rebel website, Tamilnet, says the bombs hit civilian targets, killing one person.
