2006 eventing world champion Zara Phillips broke her right collarbone after falling from her horse at a three-day international equestrian event in southern France.

Phillips, 27, the granddaughter of Queen Elizabeth, fell from her mount Tsunami II while approaching a fence in the cross-country portion of the competition on Saturday.

Her horse suffered a fractured vertebra and had to be put down.

Phillips, who was in 27th place after the opening dressage, missed the Beijing Olympics because of an injury suffered by her horse Toytown in training.
