The Returned and Services' Association says it will investigate claims that Turkish authorities are hiding the remains of soldiers unearthed by roadworks on the Gallipoli peninsula.

Australian historian Bill Sellers says human skulls and ribs were unearthed near Lone Pine and in some cases, heavy machinery had sheared bones in two.

New Zealand Returned and Services' Association president Robin Klitscher says he would be surprised if Turkish authorities did not deal with the matter with the greatest sympathy and care.

He says the association will make inquiries to determine the facts and what can be done about the situation.
