Melbourne Cup punters ignore financial gloom

There's no sign of economic gloom on the eve of the Melbourne Cup on Tuesday.

Two weeks ago, a punter wagered $A400,000 on champion Irish entry Septimus for $A1.6 million and there was an earlier bet of $A180,000 for $A1 million.

Septimus won the Irish St Leger last month by 13 lengths.

Three New Zealand entries have made the final field: Nom du Jeu, Boundless and Prize Lady.
