The TAB in Australia says concerns over the global financial crisis did not deter Melbourne Cup punters on Tuesday.

Tabcorp outlets took $A154.1 million in bets on the Melbourne Cup on Tuesday.

In Victoria, punters invested nearly $A37 million - an increase on last year when equine influenza plagued the racing season. It was also up on the year before.

In New South Wales, more than $A51 million was spent on betting.

The ABC reports Queenslanders splurged a record $A27 million.

Northern Territory punters bet an estimated $A1.3 million.

The NZ Racing Board says about $7.6 million was bet in New Zealand.

The $A5.5 million race was won by Viewed in a photo-finish with Bauer. C'est La Guerre was third.

It was a record 12th win for Bart Cummings, 80, at Flemington. He first won the Cup in 1965.
