Two Qantas planes, including one damaged in a mid-air explosion near Manila in July, have collided while being towed near Melbourne.

The airline's general manager of engineering, David Cox, says the Boeing 747s were damaged at Avalon maintenance base.

Television pictures showed damage to a wing tip of one of the planes.

Qantas has stood down the workers involved while an investigation is conducted.
