Police in Peru have stepped up security ahead of a meeting of the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation forum this weekend.

There are concerns the left-wing Shining Path group could attack in Lima, where 21 heads of state - including New Zealand Prime Minister John Key - are to meet.

More than 39,000 police will patrol the city's streets and helicopters will escort leaders' convoys.

Earlier this week, a man was arrested in Lima with 36 grenades.
