Newcastle Jets escape penalty over jersey logo

An Australian soccer team has agreed to remove a betting logo from its players' jerseys when it returns to New Zealand next year.

The Newcastle Jets play the Wellington Phoenix in an A-League match on Sunday.

The team's jerseys promote an Australian betting agency, but the Gambling Act in New Zealand bans the promotion of overseas gambling.

The Department of Internal Affairs' gambling compliance director says it will not discipline the team this time, as it was unaware of the New Zealand law.

Mike Hill says the Newcastle Jets have agreed to remove the logo when they return for another league game in January.
