German authorities have quarantined a British ship cruising the river Rhine after an outbreak of norovirus, which is highly contagious.

The Red Cross said on Tuesday 100 passengers and crew aboard the Lady Anne were banned from leaving the ship after the captain contacted emergency services in Bad Kreuznach when about 42 people showed norovirus symptoms.

The ship is docked near Boppard and passengers are being treated by German medics. Most are reported to be pensioners.

Health officials say no one will be allowed off the ship before it is disinfected.

Symptoms of the virus include nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, fever and muscle pain.
