Ten members of the Taliban have been arrested after acid was thrown in the faces of schoolgirls and their teachers in southern Afghanistan.

Deputy interior minister General Mohammad Daud Daud said on Tuesday that 10 men have been arrested in recent days in connection to the attack on eight schoolgirls and four female teachers in the southern city of Kandahar.

President Hamid Karzai earlier said those responsible would be executed in public.

Girls were barred from education by the Taliban while they were in power from 1996 until 2001.
