Washout on road to Fox Glacier

8:27 am on 27 November 2008

A storm on Tuesday has washed away a large section of the access road to Fox Glacier on the West Coast of the South Island.

Fox Glacier is famous for easy access with visitors being able to park and walk up the glacier.

Up to 400mm of rain fell on the region in the storm; with a 300 metre stretch of road being swept away, including half the causeway and the glacier car park.

The Department of Conservation says there is now no vehicle access to the glacier. Foot traffic is still allowed.

Fox Glacier Guiding chief executive Rob Jewell said the washout presents considerable challenges.
