8:44 am on 6 December 2008

Screaming teenage girls braved the cold for the UK premiere of a vampire love story in London on Thursday.

Stars Robert Pattinson, 22, and Kristen Stewart, 18, walked down a black carpet blasted with dry ice.

Twilight, based on a series of novels by Stephanie Meyer, opens in UK cinemas on 19 December.

In its first weekend in US cinemas, Twilight outsold new James Bond film Quantum of Solace and High School Musical 3 taking $US70.6 million.

It tells the story of Bella Swan who is swept up in a supernatural romance with Edward Cullen.

He is part of a family of eternally young vampires fighting their nature by refusing to feed off humans.

Meyer's series of books have sold 18 million copies in the United States.
