After spending nearly 28 years in a coma, the American heiress and former socialite Martha "Sunny" von Bulow has died in a New York nursing home at the age of 76.

Her second husband, Claus von Bulow, was twice acquitted of trying to kill her with insulin injections, after she was found unconscious in her Rhode Island mansion in December 1980.

His second trial concluded she had taken large amounts of prescription drugs.

Claus von Bulow later moved to London, divorced his comatose wife and renounced his claim to her fortune.

The events were turned into a 1990 Hollywood film, Reversal of Fortune.
