Former rebels in Ivory Coast have attacked a jail in the northern city of Bouake to free a detained comrade and set loose hundreds of other prisoners.

Military officers said on Friday about half the detainees got away. About 2000 prisoners were being held there before the attack.

Elections aimed at ending a six-year crisis were due to be held on 30 November but have been put on hold.

Ivory Coast is the world's top grower of cocoa.
