A painting by the impressionist artist Edgar Degas has been stolen from a gallery in France.

Police in Marseille say Les Choristes disappeared from an exhibition which was due to end in three days. The item was on loan from the Musee d'Orsay in Paris.

Painted around 1876, Les Choristes is a pastel work which depicts a male line of singers in the midst of performance.

The BBC reports the theft was discovered when the premises opened on Thursday morning.
