Bomb suspect 'began journey in Ghana, not Nigeria'

The authorities in Nigeria say the Nigerian man charged with trying to blow up an American airliner on Christmas Day began his journey in Ghana - not Nigeria, as has been assumed up to now.

Nigerian information minister Dora Akunyili says the man, Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, spent less than half an hour in Nigeria before boarding another flight to Amsterdam, on his way to the US city of Detroit.

In Amsterdam he changed planes for the flight to Detroit, which had 289 people aboard. He was tackled by passengers and crew as he allegedly tried to detonate explosives hidden in his underwear shortly before landing.

Charged with attempting to destroy an aircraft, he is being held at a federal prison in Michigan.
