New volcano warning issued

10:51 am on 3 January 2010

Residents close to the Mayon volcano in the Philippines have been told to watch for possible sudden explosions.

The BBC reports the alert level was earlier lowered from four to three because of decreased activity.

Those living in an 8km danger area have been warned of possible ash emissions, pyroclastic flows and rockfalls.

Mayo, 206km from Manila, has erupted 48 times since records began. It is the most active volcano in the Philippines. More than 1200 people were killed in an eruption in 1814.
