3:20 pm on 3 January 2010

Villagers in the Democratic Republic of Congo are leaving their homes after a volcano erupted close to the city of Goma in the east of the country.

Mount Nyamulagira is in the Virunga national park, but the villages are within 10km of the lava flows.

Rangers say there was a loud explosion when the volcano erupted at 3.45am.

According to officials in Virunga, Mount Nyamulagira is one of the most active volcanoes in Africa.

The BBC reports previous eruptions have threatened Goma, which has a population of at least 200,000.
