Clean water big problem in Solomon Islands

Updated at 5:45 am on 10 January 2010

UNICEF says access to clean water is the biggest problem in the Solomon Islands in the wake of a series of earthquakes and tsunamis last week.

The United Nations agency says it is starting to get a clearer picture of how people have been affected by the disaster.

It says landslides have made it hard for people to access food and clean water.

The largest of the earthquakes that hit the island of Rendova last Monday were magnitude 7.2 and 6.9.

New Zealand has made an initial contribution of $NZ50,000 to relief efforts.
