More than 100,000 police and soldiers are being deployed across the Philippines in heightened security measures ahead of national elections in May.
The move comes in the wake of the mass killing of 57 people in the southern province of Maguindanao.
Campaigning does not begin until February but this weekend marked the beginning of the official election period.
Officials say thousands of checkpoints will be put in place around the country.
The aim is to enforce a ban on all unlicensed weapons and encourage private militias to disband.
